I am a HUGE fan of holidays and I LOVE to decorate. So today, with the help of The Ribbon Retreat, I am going to share with you a fun, easy and fast Christmas table runner. I used the In From The Cold line by Kate Spain for Moda.
6 fat quarters for the middle blocks (I used a little fattie bundle)
1/4 yard for sashing
1/2 yard for border
5/8 for backing
1/4 yard binding
1/4 yard heat n bond
5 yards large rick rack (any size will work)
All seams are 1/4″ unless otherwise note. Right sides together will be shown as RST.
Cut 6 squares out to 3.5″ from each of your fat quarters.
Sew the squares into rows.
Sew your rows together and press flat.
Measure in 1.5″ from first seam and cut. So you’re cutting down the center of you middle row.
Do that same thing from the bottom so that you end with 4 squares that are 4.75″
Rotate your blocks by moving 2 blocks diagonal from each other.
Sew your 4 blocks together.
Repeat to make 3 blocks. Block should measure 9″.
Cut 4 strips from your sashing measuring 2′” by 9″. Sew 2 strips onto the top and bottom of one of your squares.
Sew the other 2 strips onto one end of the 2 remaining blocks.
Connect all your blocks end to end by sewing one sashing strip to one raw edge of each block.
Cut 2 strips 2″ by the length of table runner and sew onto your sides.
Cut 2 border strips 4″ by the length of your runner and sew onto the 2 sides of your runner.
Cut 2 strips of your border fabric 4″ by the length of your runner and sew onto the top and bottom.
Now onto the applique part. Trace the word “JOY” onto the smooth side of your heat n bond making sure that your letters are reversed.
Iron them onto the wrong side of your fabric. I used the scraps from my fat quarters.
Cut the letters out and press them onto your runners where you want them. I put mine in opposite corners on the bottom.
Then applique them to your fabric. I uses a really tight zig zag stitch. But you could also do a blanket stitch. Whatever your prefer for applique.
Make a quilt sandwich with the back, batting and top. Baste together and quilt as desired. Then trim off your excess and remove your safety pins.
